Abortion the Tip of the Spear for Antidemocrats

The recent Arizona Supreme Court ruling upholding a near total ban on abortion reminded me of a recent interview I had the opportunity to conduct for the Kettering Foundation with former NARAL Pro-Choice America president Ilyse Hogue, now a senior fellow at New America.

Ilyse was in the room during oral arguments in the U.S. Supreme Court in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine. In this case, the U.S. Supreme Court could decide to uphold a lower court ruling that bans mifepristone— a drug used in roughly half of all US abortion procedures. She explains why this is important, what is at stake —and what it means for inclusive democracy.

Her words were chilling:

All of those structural pieces of democracy that really amount to one person, one vote that have been undermined over the last several decades are brought to you by the very same people who are bringing you increasing restrictions on individual liberties — and abortion is just the tip of the spear.

Watch the full interview (15 minutes):

Abortion is on the ballot in a growing number of states.
